AP Language exams (US)
AP Spanish, AP French, AP German, AP Italian, AP Chinese, AP Japanese, AP Latin. Score 4-5 = elite. Score 5 on AP Spanish/French = roughly C1 by CEFR. Most US selective universities accept scores of 4-5 for elective credit + sometimes language-requirement waiver. AP exam is the single most-recognized credential for US college admissions.
IB Language A vs Language B (international)
IB Language A is for native-level speakers (Literature track). Language B is for non-native acquisition (typically Mandarin/Spanish/French as second/third language). Score 5+ in Language B HL is roughly B2-C1. IB credentials are particularly weighted at international + UK universities.
DELF / DELE / Goethe / HSK / TOPIK / JLPT
Country-specific exams matter most when applying to that country's universities OR demonstrating advanced proficiency to US admissions. DELF B2 → required for many French universities. DELE B2-C1 → similar for Spanish universities. Goethe C1 → German university admission. HSK 4+ → many Chinese university programs. TOPIK 3+ → Korean. JLPT N2+ → Japanese. US admissions officers know these certificates exist + treat them as credible proof of proficiency.
Seal of Biliteracy (US, K-12)
Awarded by 48 US states + DC. Requires demonstrated proficiency (typically AP 4+, IB 5+, or state-specific assessment) in English + one other language. Appears on the transcript + diploma. US admissions officers see it; it's a small but real differentiator at competitive schools.
SAT Subject Tests (retired 2021)
The College Board retired SAT Subject Tests in January 2021. Students applying now cannot use these. Older guidance referencing 'SAT II Spanish' is outdated. AP exams remain the standardized-test credential.
What admissions officers ACTUALLY look at
Years of study (4 years HS Spanish > 2 years). AP/IB score (4-5 elite). National credentials (DELF B2, HSK 4+). Real-world demonstration (study abroad, heritage-speaker proficiency, language used in employment). Vague claims of 'fluent in 3 languages' without credentials are discounted. Concrete evidence beats self-assessed claims every time.
