How the arithmetic works: your rate times your lessons is what you bill. A platform's cut is its published percentage of that, plus the full value of any lesson it pays you nothing for. Card-processing fees are left out on every row, including ours, because you would pay those wherever you taught.
Two rows are deliberately blank until you fill them in. italki's Teacher Policy of 30 January 2026 removed its published percentages and ties the fee to the teacher's overall performance, and AmazingTalker's tutor terms did not load when we checked on 3 August 2026. We are not going to print a percentage for either that they have not published themselves.
Cambly's row works differently because Cambly does. It pays a fixed rate per minute rather than a share of what you charge, so the figure shown is its published hourly pay applied to your lesson count, treating one lesson as one hour. Your own rate does not enter into it — that is the point of a pay ceiling.
Koydo's row is 0% because your students pay you directly and there is no Koydo checkout for lessons at all. The one thing you buy from us is your background screening, at the provider's price plus 20%, which is not part of this table because it is not per-lesson.

A ladder that never resets. Preply's commission falls from 33% to 18.20%, but the steps are gated on lifetime hours taught on Preply. It is not a discount you earn once and keep everywhere — it belongs to the platform, not to you.
A fee your student pays that you never see. Wyzant charges the tutor 25% and the student a further 9% service fee, so the gap between what your student spends and what reaches you is roughly 31%. Your student feels the whole spread even though only part of it comes out of your side.
A rate that was withdrawn rather than lowered. italki's current Teacher Policy no longer publishes percentages and says the fee varies with the teacher's overall performance. A number you cannot look up is a number you cannot plan around, which is its own kind of cost.
Koydo is not in your lesson-payment path. You and the family agree terms and they pay you directly — there is no Koydo checkout for lessons and no Koydo balance holding your money, so there is nothing for us to take a percentage of.
Koydo is funded by the subscriptions families buy for the learning side, and by the optional $19-a-month Pro Educator workspace a tutor can choose. The workspace buys tools. It does not buy search position — there is no promoted listing on Koydo to buy at any price.
One cost is real and we say it before you ask: every publicly listed tutor clears background screening, and you buy it yourself at the provider's price plus 20%. Paying for it never guarantees clearance and never changes where you appear.
Most of them are the platform's own published policy page, linked in the table, with the date we last checked it. Two are not, and each says so on its own row: Verbling publishes no fee schedule we could retrieve, and the Superprof figures come from an independent review of its terms rather than from Superprof. We do not average, estimate, or repeat a number we read on a blog. If a platform stopped publishing its rate, the row stays blank and asks you for the figure on your payout statement instead.
Because italki emptied it. Its Teacher Policy effective 30 January 2026 removed the published percentages and says the fee varies with the teacher's overall performance. The widely-quoted 21% is a figure teachers report, not one italki publishes, so we will not print it as fact. Type what your own statement says and the comparison fills in.
Because Preply's own commission page says it takes 100% of every trial lesson with a new student — every new student, not just your first one. If you take two new-student trials a month, that is two lessons of your time at zero, on top of the commission on everything else. The calculator counts them, because your bank account does.
No, and not on our row either. You would pay processing wherever you taught, so including it would flatter whichever platform we wanted to flatter. Leaving it off every row keeps the comparison about the platform's cut.
Zero percent of your lesson rate. Your students pay you directly and there is no Koydo checkout for lessons, so your lesson money never passes through us. Listing and being matched with a family are free. The optional Pro Educator workspace is a flat $19 a month for teaching tools — it does not change your 0%, and it does not move you up the directory.
No. Listing on Koydo is free, so the sensible move is to keep what works and add a listing that doesn't take a cut. We are not going to ask you to move students you met elsewhere — that would put you in breach of terms you agreed to, and it is a bad thing to ask of someone.
