Microschools are not small schools. They are a different category.
The microschool category has grown from a curiosity in 2019 to an estimated tens of thousands of cohorts post-pandemic — converted-living-room pods, rented-church-basement schoolhouses, family-co-op classrooms, and the new wave of education-savings-account-funded learning environments emerging in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Utah, and West Virginia. The structural reality is almost always the same: a small founding team (often a parent-operator) running 2-15 students across 2-4 grade bands inside a single physical space, with a per-family tuition model that has no slack for $40,000-per-language teacher salaries.
The product gap that follows from those numbers is sharp. Consumer language apps (Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, Babbel) are built for a single adult learner inside a long owl-streak gamification loop — they do not surface a microschool admin dashboard, do not produce a per-cohort gradebook, do not ship the COPPA parental-consent flow that any K-8 program needs to operate legally, and do not give parents the proof-of-progress evidence (audio of the child reading aloud, error trends, mastered vocabulary) that justifies the tuition. School-grade platforms (Lingoda Teams, Rosetta Stone Enterprise) are quote-only, assume a 25-seat-plus floor, and assume an FTE language teacher exists on the operator side. Neither end of the market fits the microschool reality.

For pricing and product purposes Koydo treats a microschool as any K-12 learning pod with 2-50 students that is structurally smaller than a chartered school but more structured than homeschool — typically a single physical space (a converted living room, a rented church basement, a co-working schoolhouse), a parent-operator or small founding team, and a per-family or per-seat tuition model. Most microschools we work with run between 6 and 20 students and span 2-4 grade bands.
Three reasons. First, neither Duolingo nor Rosetta Stone ships a microschool admin dashboard — there is no per-cohort progress view, no parent-share-link with audio, no roster sync, no shared gradebook across the pod. Second, Duolingo's owl-streak gamification is built to keep an individual adult learner engaged for years; it conflicts with a 90-minute language block inside a school day. Koydo Lingua's curriculum is CEFR-graded, paced for instructor-led cohort study, and includes the music + tracing + conversation tracks that fit a small in-person classroom. Third, Koydo includes the COPPA parental-consent flow that any K-8 program needs to operate legally; cobbling it together yourself across 12 individual app subscriptions is a compliance liability microschools should not be carrying.

We run a Microschool Pilot path for cohorts under the 25-seat /for-schools floor. The pilot is 30 days free up to 15 seats with full admin features and the signed Data Processing Agreement. After the pilot, microschools under 25 seats roll onto the same $15-per-active-seat rate as the 25-seat tier with no minimum-seat floor (so a 12-seat microschool pays $180/month, not the $375 the standard 25-seat tier implies). Built into the onboarding flow. The microschool operator imports a CSV roster (name, parent email, grade band). Each under-13 student account triggers an email to the parent requesting verified consent before any audio or transcript is stored. Parents review what data is collected, who can see it, and how to revoke consent at any time. The microschool operator never has to design the consent UX themselves. The flow is inherited from Koydo's main Sprouts (2-5) / Junior (5-8) / Kids (8-11) age tiers — battle-tested on tens of thousands of K-8 accounts.

Both paths are supported. (A) Microschool pays Koydo per active seat and recovers from parents through whatever tuition system the school already runs (this is the simplest path and most pilots start here). (B) Koydo's Stripe Connect Express integration lets the microschool operator collect Lingua enrichment fees directly from parents through a branded sub-page; the operator's Stripe account receives the payments, Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ passes through, Koydo charges the operator the per-seat rate as a separate monthly bill.
